The 9th and 10th October 2019 were important days for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Indeed, the next three years in the fight to end the world’s deadliest infectious diseases, seem more promising.
At the Sixth Replenishment Conference in Lyon, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, US$14.02 billion were raised to help save 16 million lives, avert 234 million infections and help the world get back on track to eliminate the three diseases by 2030. It is the largest amount ever raised for a multilateral health organization, and the largest amount received by the Global Fund since its inception.
Behind this epic achievement, the legal team has been instrumental in making this happen. From sustained support in the negotiations of contribution agreements from public and private donors, to legal and policy advice to various Global Fund teams involved in the replenishment efforts, lawyers were attentive in getting things on track while mitigating the risks from an institutional standpoint.
Now that the end of the year is approaching, the Global Fund’s Legal team is looking ahead to the next cycle of grants and exciting challenges to come.
